How to Make Coffee Concentrate: Easy Cold Brew Recipe

Making coffee concentrate at home is simpler than you think. The most reliable method is cold brewing: mix coarse coffee grounds with cold water at a ratio of 1:4 to 1:8 by weight, steep for 12 to 24 hours at room temperature, then strain twice. The result is a smooth, low-acid concentrate that you dilute with water or milk over ice. This guide walks you through every step, from choosing the right grind to storing your concentrate for up to two weeks.

How to Make Coffee Concentrate: The Cold Brew Method

The cold brew method is the gold standard for coffee concentrate because it extracts slowly, producing a sweeter, less bitter cup. Unlike hot brewing, cold water never shocks the grounds, so you get a clean, chocolatey flavor with almost no acidity. To start, you need three things: coarse coffee grounds, filtered water, and a large jar or French press.

Choose the Right Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Ratios are measured by weight, not volume, for consistency. A 1:4 ratio (one part coffee to four parts water) yields a very strong concentrate, while 1:8 is milder. Most home brewers prefer 1:5 or 1:6 as a balanced starting point. For a single batch, try 100 grams of coffee to 500 grams of water (1:5). If you want a ready-to-drink iced coffee without diluting, use a 1:15 ratio and skip the concentrate step.

Grind Coarse, Like Sea Salt

Grind size matters more than you might think. Use a coarse grind, similar to sea salt or breadcrumbs. Too fine, and your coffee will turn bitter and muddy; too coarse, and it will be weak and sour. A burr grinder gives the most consistent results. If you buy pre-ground coffee, ask for the coarsest setting available.

Steep for 12 to 24 Hours at Room Temperature

Place the grounds in a large jar, add the water, and stir gently to ensure all grounds are saturated. Cover and let it sit at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours. The longer you steep, the stronger and more caffeinated the concentrate becomes. After 24 hours, the flavor plateaus, so don't go beyond that unless you want a very bold brew. According to the National Coffee Association, cold brew typically steeps for 12 to 24 hours.

Double Strain for a Clean Cup

After steeping, strain the mixture twice. First, pour it through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the bulk of the grounds. Then, line the strainer with a coffee filter or a piece of cheesecloth and strain again to catch the fine silt. This double straining gives you a crystal-clear concentrate that won't turn gritty over ice.

Dilute and Serve Over Ice

Concentrate is meant to be diluted. The standard ratio is 1:1 concentrate to water or milk, but you can adjust to taste. Fill a glass with ice, pour in the concentrate, then add an equal amount of cold water or your favorite milk. Stir and enjoy. For a sweeter drink, add simple syrup or vanilla syrup before the milk.

How to Store Coffee Concentrate

Store your concentrate in a sealed glass jar in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 2 weeks, but the flavor is best within the first 7 days. Because concentrate is shelf-stable at cold temperatures, you can batch-brew once a week and have iced coffee ready anytime. Always use a clean spoon to avoid introducing bacteria.

Ready-to-Drink Iced Coffee Alternative

If you don't want to bother with dilution, make a 1:15 cold brew instead. Use the same coarse grind and steeping time, but skip the second strain and serve it straight over ice. This method produces a lighter, ready-to-drink coffee that's perfect for hot days. It's also a great base for vanilla cold foam.

Tips for the Best Coffee Concentrate

• Use filtered water for a cleaner taste.
• Weigh your coffee and water for consistency.
• Stir the mixture halfway through steeping to ensure even extraction.
• Experiment with different beans: medium roasts work best for cold brew.
• Don't throw away the spent grounds; compost them or use them as a body scrub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does coffee concentrate last in the fridge?

Properly stored in a sealed container, coffee concentrate lasts up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. For the best flavor, consume it within 7 days.

Can I use regular ground coffee for cold brew concentrate?

Yes, but a coarse grind is essential. If your grind is too fine, the coffee will become bitter and cloudy. Ask your roaster for a cold brew grind.

Is coffee concentrate the same as espresso?

No. Espresso is brewed with hot water under pressure, while coffee concentrate is made by cold steeping. They have different flavor profiles and caffeine levels.

How much caffeine is in coffee concentrate?

Caffeine content varies by bean and ratio. A 1:5 concentrate can have roughly 200 mg per 100 ml, but this is an estimate. Diluting it 1:1 brings it closer to regular brewed coffee.

Can I make coffee concentrate without a French press?

Absolutely. Use a large jar and a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter. A French press is convenient but not required.
