How Is Liquid Coffee Concentrate Made? (2026 Guide)

Liquid coffee concentrate is made by steeping Ground Coffee in cold water for 12 to 24 hours, filtering out the grounds, and then removing water through heat or vacuum evaporation to create a shelf-stable syrup. Commercial producers use a cold-steep extraction followed by filtration and concentration, while home brewers can make a simpler version with a jar and a filter.

How is liquid coffee concentrate made?

The commercial process for making liquid coffee concentrate follows four main steps: cold-steep extraction, filtration, concentration, and packaging. Each step is designed to preserve flavor while creating a shelf-stable product that can be diluted with water or milk.

1. Cold-steep extraction: Ground coffee is steeped in cold or room-temperature water for 12 to 24 hours. This slow extraction pulls out soluble compounds without the heat that can create bitter flavors.
2. Filtration: The steeped liquid is passed through fine filters to remove coffee grounds and sediment. Commercial operations use industrial filters or centrifuges.
3. Concentration: The filtered liquid is concentrated by removing water. This can be done through heat evaporation or vacuum evaporation, which lowers the boiling point to protect delicate flavors.
4. Packaging: The concentrate is pasteurized and packaged in bottles, cans, or bags. Some products are nitrogen-flushed to extend shelf life.

The cold-steep extraction is what gives liquid coffee concentrate its signature smoothness. Because the water never gets hot, fewer bitter compounds are extracted, resulting in a naturally sweeter and less acidic coffee. This is why many people with sensitive stomachs prefer cold brew concentrate over hot brewed coffee.

"Cold brew coffee is less acidic than hot brew, which may make it easier on the stomach," said Dr. Niny Rao, co-author of a 2018 study published in Scientific Reports.

What is the difference between cold brew concentrate and regular coffee?

Cold brew concentrate is a concentrated form of coffee that you dilute before drinking. Regular brewed coffee is ready to drink as is. The table below highlights the key differences.

How do you dilute liquid coffee concentrate?

The standard dilution ratio for cold brew concentrate is 1 part concentrate to 1 to 2 parts water or milk, depending on your taste. For a stronger cup, use a 1:1 ratio; for a milder cup, use 1:3. When you buy a bottle of liquid coffee concentrate, the label usually suggests a dilution ratio. Some brands are more concentrated than others, so always start with a 1:1 ratio and adjust to taste.

• 1:1 for a bold, espresso-like strength
• 1:2 for a balanced cup
• 1:3 for a lighter, smoother drink

How do you make a latte with liquid coffee concentrate?

To make a latte with liquid coffee concentrate, combine 1 part concentrate with 2 parts milk, then heat or froth the milk. For a hot latte, steam the milk and pour over the concentrate. For an iced latte, use cold milk and ice. You can also use liquid coffee concentrate to make a quick iced latte. Just add ice, milk, and concentrate to a glass and stir. No brewing required.

1. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of concentrate to a cup.
2. Heat 6 to 8 ounces of milk and froth it.
3. Pour the milk over the concentrate and stir.
4. Sweeten to taste if desired.

How much coffee grounds do you need for homemade cold brew concentrate?

For a homemade batch, use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:4 to 1:8 by weight. A common recipe is 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee to 4 cups of water. This yields a concentrate that you can dilute to taste. For a stronger concentrate, use a 1:4 ratio. For a milder one, use 1:8. The grind size matters too: use a coarse grind to avoid over-extraction and a muddy texture.

FAQ

How long does liquid coffee concentrate last?

Unopened, commercial liquid coffee concentrate can last for months at room temperature. Once opened, refrigerate it and use within 2 to 4 weeks.

Can you use hot water to make coffee concentrate?

Yes, but hot water extracts more bitter compounds. Cold brewing is preferred for a smoother, less acidic concentrate.

Is liquid coffee concentrate the same as espresso?

No. Espresso is brewed under pressure with hot water, while concentrate is steeped cold and then concentrated. They have different flavor profiles and strengths.

How much caffeine is in liquid coffee concentrate?

Caffeine content varies by brand and dilution. A typical 1-ounce serving of concentrate contains about 60 to 100 mg of caffeine, but check the label.
