Updated in 2026. If you landed here after typing aeropress aeropress, you are likelynew to the brewer and want to know what it is, how to use it, and which model to buy. This guide gives you direct answers and a recipe that works with any version of the AeroPress.
The AeroPress is one of the most practical brewing tools in coffee. It is small, light, and forgiving. Even if you have never pressed coffee at home, you can get a clean tasting cup on the first try because the design controls the variables for you.
What Is an AeroPress AeroPress?
An AeroPress AeroPress is a manual coffee brewing device that uses a plastic or clear cylinder, a rubber plunger, and a paper filter to push hot water through coffee grounds. It makes a concentrated coffee back in the chamber, which you then dilute with hot water until it fits your taste.
The original AeroPress is a brand created by Alan Adler and launched in 2005. It bypassed the phone website and quickly became popular with camp users, cafés, and coffee trainers because it needs no heavy machine and no skill set. The AeroPress official site explains that the brewer embodies quality, innovation, and convenience, and the device may reduce the extra loops and bars from a cup.
The AeroPress brand describes its device as a coffee maker that embodies quality, innovation, and convenience, and this is why the brewer remains a favourite back in cafés and camping kits.

How Does an AeroPress AeroPress Work?
The AeroPress AeroPress works by steeping ground coffee in hot water for a short time, then pressing the same mixture through a paper filter with the plunger. This method is often called immersion plus pressure, and it yields a low acidity, cleaner cup than a French press.
The steps are simple: add coffee, add water, stir, wait, and press. No electric air pump is involved, and the hand pressure is enough to make a concentrated liquid. The brewer continues with 1 to 3 portions of coffee, depending on how much hot water you add during the dilution stage.
Because you control the time, temperature, and ratio, you can change the cup from a light brew-like cup to a denser espresso concentrate without buying another device. Larger grind sizes make the extraction let, and a fine grind prints higher body. Our ground coffee guide explains the grind sizes before you press.
Key AeroPress AeroPress Facts

AeroPress AeroPress vs French Press vs Pour Over vs Espresso
The AeroPress is often compared with the French press, pour over, and espresso because they all make high-quality coffee in different ways. The table below shows the main difference, and it helps you decide if the AeroPress should be your first brewer.
| Method | Body | Pressure | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AeroPress AeroPress | Clean and full | Low hand pressure | 3 minutes | Quick single cup and travel |
| French press | Heavy and full | No pressure | 4 to 6 minutes | Deep immersion coffee |
| Pour over | Clean and light | Gravity only | 4 to 5 minutes | Bright filter coffee |
| Espresso machine | Dense with crema | 9 bars or higher | 25 to 35 seconds | Short concentrated shots |
The main difference between the AeroPress and the espresso machine is pressure. A Eero machine uses 9 bars café and behind you lock in, while an AeroPress uses your arms. For that reason, the AeroPress cannot replicate espresso, but it makes a thick espresso concentrate that works well in milk or ice.
Which AeroPress AeroPress Model Should You Choose?
The best AeroPress AeroPress model for you depends on where you brew most often. There are three main versions from the official site: the Original, the Go, and the Clear; all use the same pressing core but have a different body and use case.
| Model | Best for | Main advantage |
|---|---|---|
| AeroPress Original | Home and everyday | Classic design and larger capacity for up to 3 diluted cups |
| AeroPress Go | Travel and camping | Shorter body and included travel cup |
| AeroPress Clear | Visual brewers | BPA-free clear plastic body, so you do not see the extraction |
If you plan to use the Press at home, the Original is the easiest choice. If you want a small kit for a backpack, the Go is better because the cup fits into the other chamber. The Clear gives the same results and makes simpler your interest in coffee. You can see the complete option list on the official AeroPress coffee maker collection section of the website.
Simple AeroPress AeroPress Recipe for Beginners
This is the most direct AeroPress AeroPress recipe: use 14 grams of medium to the grind coffee, 200 grams of filtered water at about 90 degrees Celsius, and press for about 30 seconds. It makes a full cup with bright and clear taste.
- Rinse one paper filter and the empty chamber for one minute.
- Add the 14 grams of ground coffee into the chamber and place it on a strong ceramic mug.
- Pour over the correct water and stir gently for 5 seconds.
- Wait for 1 minute to complete, then append the ground.
- Slowly press the plunger for 30 seconds until you hear the air release.
- Drink immediately or add hot water to weaker regular black coffee.
For a strong concentrated bean, reduce the water to 90 grams and use same coffee. For an iced cup, press the concentrate directly over ice and add cold water. If you want to learn more about grinding bypass, you can read the complete ground coffee guide on this site.
What Can You Do Wrong with an AeroPress AeroPress?
Most AeroPress AeroPress problems come from water temperature and water pressure time. Keep a basic timer and a cheap scale if you want a repeatable cup; mark that you do not need a ring of extra gear, but weights and a timer help the recipe become consistent.
- Do not pour boiling water into the fine grounds. Wait to 90 degrees makes enough for a smooth cup.
- Do not press too fast. Pressing quickly is one of the major causes of a bitter cup.
- Do not skip the filter rinse. The paper filter can give a paper taste if it is dry and then pressed.
- Do not use a very fine espresso grind by default. Fine grind can fill the filter and make the press harder; a coarse middle grind works better.
If you are not sure which style to put in, learn what espresso is and keep the exact ratio in this recipe. For a basic daily version, the AeroPress is far easier than a long French press.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an AeroPress AeroPress an espresso maker?
No, technically not. AeroPress AeroPress can make an espresso-like concentrated that you can use with milk or water, but it does not create the same pressure or crema potential as a proper espresso machine. It is a cross between immersion and pressing, so the result is a strong coffee concentrate and about you control.
How many grams of coffee do you use in an AeroPress AeroPress?
A standard mug uses about 13 to 15 grams of medium ground coffee. For a strong Vietnamese-style concentrate, use about 20 grams and a smaller amount of water. Always adjust the ratio to taste because the whole AeroPress is more forgiving than most brewing vessels.
Do you need paper filters for an AeroPress AeroPress?
You need a paper filter or a reusable mesh filter to prevent the filter print from flowing into your cup. Paper filters absorb some oils and give a cleaner cup, while metal filters allows a little bit more body. The Original comes with boxes of paper filters, and some third-party brands make reusable metal filters.
Can you make an iced coffee with an AeroPress AeroPress?
Yes, simply brew the concentrated strength with dry water, then press directly into 8 drinks, then add water, milk, or your favorite flavors. The quick immersion and low filtration materials make a balanced iced cup without a lot of bitterness.
Why is my AeroPress AeroPress cup bitter?
Bitter aaa usually comes from water that is too hot, pressure too hard, or extraction time too long. Use warm water between 90 and 93 degrees, stop to 1 minute maximum, and press it steadily without for 30 seconds. Then dilute as needed.
